Lelystad Airport is the biggest General Aviation airport in the Netherlands. Is is part of Schiphol Group which will use Lelystad Airport in the nearby future to accommodate leisure flights to southern and eastern European destinations. Therefor the present 1250/30 mtrs runway will be extended to 2400/45 mtrs. Lelystad Airport is also focussing on business aviation and maintenance repair and overhaul (MRO). As relief airport close to Amsterdam city center and Amsterdam Airport Schiphol it is an ideal place with plenty of affordable solutions for new activities. In the past few years some major MRO companies such as the STTS/QAPS paintshop and the Specto composite repair shop have opened brandnew facilities at Lelystad Airport. Also a new 737 size hangar is already available for MRO companies.
The Dutch Minister of Transport will approve the runway extension at Lelystad Airport by late 2014. Schiphol Group has announced that it will invest in 2015/2017 a total of 59 mio Euros in the runway extension and a new passenger terminal. For new MRO companies there is plenty of room available. The airport is also supporting the establishment of a training facility for MRO-companies which will enable companies to get internships and future labour potential at their doorstep.
Lelystad Airport wil get a direct access to the nearby motorway A6 which is the most important connection between Amsterdam and the North. A direct bus shuttle will give access to nearby Lelystad Intercity Train Station with direct connections to the western, central and northern parts of Holland.
